WooReads Adult Patron Book Reviews: Non-Fiction

Let the countdown begin! We have only four days left of  WooReads: The Adult Read-In Challenge. We need to reach our community goal of 5,000 books read by May 31st. You can log all of the books you've read since September. If you're looking for something new to read, try one of the non-fiction books below, all of which received great reviews from our patrons.

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

A really riveting, very starkly honest and yet undeniably hopeful dive into the racial and class inequalities present in our criminal justice system. ~ Eun Sol L.

The Library Book by Susan Orlean

This is an amazing work of great detail demonstrating superb research skills, beautifully woven together as a fascinating history of Los Angeles, its characters and its library. ~ Allison H.

The Deepest Well by Nadine Burke Harris

Dr. Harris is a woman on a crusade to expand universal screening for ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences, i.e. traumatic childhood events) that are thought to lead to an increased risk of physical illness including stroke & heart disease. I am a fan of her persuasive writing style and her ability to present findings of research. ~ Sharmarke A.

The Book Of Forgotten Authors by Christopher Fowler

Fascinating book about the best-selling authors of the past who have disappeared from the reading public's memory. Christopher Fowler has written an entertaining guide to 100 lost and forgotten writers such as Emma Orcyz, (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Eleanor Hibbert (aka Victoria Holt), & Peter Fleming (brother of Ian Fleming). You can find something to interest everyone in this fun collection of short essays. Read it and then head to the second hand book store! ~ Mary R.

Late, Late at Night by Rick Springfield

Interesting behind-the-scenes story of a singer/songwriter/actor from Australia, best known for the song "Jessie's Girl" and a short stint on General Hospital. I didn't know he suffered from lifelong depression, and neither did he until his 40's. Good to know a strong commitment between he and his wife allowed them to weather the storm that a mental illness and some typical rock-star behaviors can sometimes derail. I also enjoyed hearing about the importance that dogs have played in his life! ~ Linda J.

Best Novel: The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffiths

Clare is no stranger to murder. A high school teacher specializing in the Gothic writer R. M. Holland, she even teaches a course on him. But when one of Clare's colleagues is found dead, with a line from Holland's story "The Stranger" left by her body, Clare is horrified to see her life collide with literature. The police suspect the killer is someone Clare knows. Unsure whom to trust, she turns to her diary. Then one day she notices writing that isn't hers, left on the page of an old diary: "Hallo Clare. You don't know me." Clare becomes certain: "The Stranger" has come to life.

Best First Novel: Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

How far will you go to protect your family? Keep secrets? Ignore lies? In Virginia, a group of people know each other because they use a special treatment center, a hyperbaric chamber that may cure a range of conditions. But then the chamber explodes, two people die, and the explosion wasn't an accident. The story moves across characters who are all maybe keeping secrets. Chapter by chapter, we shift alliances and gather evidence: Was it the mother of a patient? Was it the owners, hoping to cash in on an insurance payment? Could it have been a protester, trying to prove the treatment isn't safe? Recommended by Scott Turow, Laura Lippman, and more— Miracle Creek is a brave debut from an unforgettable new voice.

Best Paperback Original: The Hotel Neversink by Adam O'Fallon Price

Thirty-one years after workers broke ground, the Hotel Neversink finally opens. Then a young boy disappears. This mysterious vanishing—and those that follow—will brand three generations. At the root of it is Asher, the ruthless patriarch whose purchase of the hotel in 1931 set a legacy into motion. His daughter Jeanie sees the hotel into its most lucrative era, but also its darkest. Decades later, Asher's grandchildren grapple with their heritage: Len fights to keep the hotel alive, and Alice sets out to uncover the murderer's identity. Told by an unforgettable chorus of family members—a matriarch, a maid, a comedian, a detective, and others—The Hotel Neversink is the gripping portrait of a family over the course of a century.

Best Fact Crime: The Less People Know About Us: A Mystery of Betrayal, Family Secrets, and Stolen Identity by Axton Betz-Hamilton

Axton grew up in Indiana in the '90s. When she was 11, her parents had their identities stolen and their credit ratings ruined. This was before identity theft was common, so authorities were reluctant to help. Axton's family changed all of their personal information and moved to different addresses, but the identity thief followed. Convinced that the thief was someone they knew, Axton and her parents isolated themselves. Years later, Axton discovered she, too, had fallen prey to the identity thief, but by the time she realized, she was already in debt and her credit was ruined. The Less People Know About Us is Axton's attempt to untangle an intricate web of lies, and to understand why and how a loved one could have inflicted such pain.

Best Short Story: "One of These Nights" from Cutting Edge: New Stories of Mystery and Crime by Women Writers by Livia Llewellyn

Joyce Carol Oates, a queenpin of the noir genre, has brought her discerning eye to the curation of an outstanding anthology of brand-new top-shelf short stories (and poems by Margaret Atwood!). While bad men are not always the victims in these tales, they get their due often enough to satisfy readers who are tired of the gendered status quo, or who just want to have a little bit of fun at the expense of a crumbling patriarchal society. This stylistically diverse collection will make you squirm in your seat, stay up at night, laugh out loud, and inevitably wish for more.

Friday Kanopy Movie Pick: Havana Motor Club

You can watch movies via Kanopy at any time. To watch Havana Motor Club now, click here, then sign into your account.

If you do not have a Kanopy account, you can create one. Click here for instructions.

This documentary features Havana's vibrant community of underground drag racers and their quest to hold Cuba's first official car race since the end of the revolution in 1959. Racers enlist the help of Cuban-Americans for modern car parts or use motors found in unusual places, while some rely on ingenuity rather than resources. Through the eyes of these racers, Havana Motor Club explores how Cuba is changing today, and what its future holds in terms of relations with the U.S.

Cuba & Classic Cars

Cuba's rich culture includes a love of classic cars, many of which are used for tourism. These cars are also family heirlooms that are passed down from generation to generation.

American cars were imported into Cuba around the early twentieth century. After the Cuban Revolution, car racing was banned and considered an elitist sport. With the implementation of a U.S. trade embargo around the same time, Cuba stopped receiving American cars.

Cuba’s reputation as a living museum for classic cars draws many tourists. With the U.S. trade embargo still in place, it’s Cuban ingenuity that has kept these classic American cars running, which is truly impressive.

How to use Kanopy

Kanopy is a streaming service that is free to use with your WPL card. Your account has 4 watch credits per month. If you do not use your credits, they do not roll over to the next month. You will see a "play credit tracker" at the top right of your library's Kanopy platform to alert you of how many play credits you have remaining for the month.

To use a play credit, you must press play on a video and have the video play for at least 5 seconds. Once a play credit is logged, you will have a full 3 days (72 hours) to watch the video as many times as you would like without using another play credit, even if a new month starts and your credits reset. Your Viewing History will show any video that is still available to view in your 3 day window. After the 3 day window has expired, another play credit will be used if you press play on the video again.

Kanopy is currently offering credit-free viewing for select films. If you watch any of the movies on this list, you will not be using your credits. Click here for credit-free films.
